Iris Gonzalez

Iris Gonzalez is a contemporary photographer working primarily with still life. Her practice centers on flowers and natural forms, approached with precision, restraint, and sustained attention to material presence.

Her work is informed by the visual language of historical still life painting, particularly the tradition of Dutch still lifes. Rather than reconstructing these images, Gonzalez engages with their underlying concerns and translates them into a contemporary photographic context. Light, composition, and surface play a central role in this process.

Flowers are carefully selected and arranged, yet they are never treated as static objects. Their fragility, their gradual change, and their resistance to complete control remain visible within the image. The moment of balance is temporary and carries the awareness that it will inevitably shift.

Through this careful staging, her photographs reflect on themes of time, impermanence, and the human desire to preserve what is transient. Order is present, but never absolute. Symmetry, when it appears, functions as a quiet structure rather than a fixed system.

The images are developed slowly and deliberately. Each work exists as an independent photographic piece, shaped through a process of observation, adjustment, and restraint. The emphasis lies not on spectacle or abundance, but on attention and stillness.

Gonzalez’s practice continues to evolve with an increasing focus on exhibition-based presentation and the relationship between individual works within a series.

She is based in the Netherlands.
